Broby-Johansen blows up the picture

North Zealand without sophistication

Broby-Johansen: With Broby around Roskilde Fjord and in North Zealand.

VOLUME TWELVE of Broby-Johansen's art guide covers Northeast Zealand. The cover may feature a grand commander's shield from Frederiksborg. But it is the shield of department head Einar Cohn, and Einar Cohn's motto is also Broby-Johansen's own program: >>observe and assess<<.

Once again he tours a part of the country with the artists, in search of art and culture. The book is packed with images in a life-like diversity, and the photographers are allowed to be part of it.

Surprisingly, Leif Grage's photograph is through the grille in Christian the Fourth's throne in Roskilde Cathedral. In the same church, Broby naturally stops at Peder Jensen Lodehat's tombstone in the choir aisle, with what he calls our oldest portrait head. Yes, even on the verge of caricature, and not lovable. At the Willumsen Museum, he finds the idea of museums for one man less good. I agree with him.

Broby-Johansen is the first to dare to omit the obligatory fainting at Louisiana in Humlebæk. I have written beautifully about Louisiana myself, because I believe we are to be thanked for the institution being created. But Broby is not wrong. To be honest, the museum's own art collection does not interest me, except for a few things, and I agree with Broby that the institution's greatest achievement is the large exhibitions of ancient cultures, Rome, Mexico, China, etc. Broby-Johansen loves the frescoes in churches, and fortunately also Eiler Krag, our living master of the art before the artists: drawing. Broby can put pictures together without words so that they speak cheerfully, like pages 46-47, two pictures of Ring, with their quiet honesty, next to Exner's harvest feast, so romantic and pretty, but were there really only pretty girls in the parishes at that time?

Northeast Zealand is a difficult task, because that part of the country has been depicted so firmly and affably from the days of the Romantics to the tourist brochures. Broby-Johansen has shattered that image. One is almost saying that this is >>North Zealand itself<<. Tourists, summer guests and fashionable expatriates will hopefully find themselves in other printed matter, here it is - Northeast Zealand.
