Decorate the summer house in retro style

In the summerhouse you can allow yourself to be creative in your interior design. There is room to try different styles and see what works for you.

The retro style is perfect for the cozy summer house atmosphere. You can go all in and create a time capsule from childhood in orange and dark brown. Go hunting in our department with vintage applied art . Or you can just spice up your interior with a few well-chosen retro lamps . The right balance is often found in the details. Colored glass on the shelves, embroidered cushions on the sofa or just a single piece of furniture in a strong color.

Retro furniture in teak and old bamboo furniture are popular when decorating a summer house. Furniture from the 60s and 70s in particular finds its place in modern interiors. Here at Mission Afrika Genbrug you will find both small furniture for the interior and furniture for the children's room. Add a few embroidered cushions from the old days and the nostalgic atmosphere is at home.

Upcycling of furniture

We love when old furniture gets a new lease of life. If the color of your old piece of furniture isn't quite right or the upholstery is worn out, it can be tempting to throw it away. Fortunately, many people are getting into furniture upcycling. The creative trend extends the life of furniture and transforms old things into cutting-edge retro finds.

When you paint an old piece of furniture, it will naturally lose some of its natural patina, but you can still paint an old piece of furniture with respect for its age. Use dusty vintage colors such as off-white, pink, and light green.

How to do it:

  • Scrape off any loose paint residue.
  • Clean the furniture with a basic cleaner
  • Fill any old holes with putty.
  • Sand the surface down with sandpaper in the direction of the grain.
  • Paint in several thin layers
  • Lightly sand edges and moldings for the perfect vintage look.

If you have the courage to embark on larger upcycling projects, you can try reupholstering a chair.

How do you reupholster a chair?

You can easily reupholster a regular dining chair yourself.

Start by removing the seat from the chair so you can work with it.

Remove old upholstery and fabric from the seat. You can use a flat screwdriver to loosen old staples and pliers to pull them out. If the upholstery is glued to the seat, you can use a putty knife to scrape off the glue.

Glue new foam to the seat and cut with a craft knife. The foam can extend a little beyond the seat. Glue a piece of batting on top with spray glue. Make sure there is enough batting to fold around the seat.

Place new fabric over the seat and use a stapler to staple the fabric to the back. If the wood is hard, you may need a staple gun with a compressor. You can find one at most hardware stores. Once you have stapled one side, take the opposite side as the next. This way you avoid pulling the fabric crooked. Start by stapled all the sides and finish with the corners.

Upcycling idea: Go on a recycling hunt for different old dining room chairs. Paint the frames of the chairs the same color and cover the seats with the same fabric. Then you have a dining table with unique chairs around it - without it running off in all directions.
