Vinyl records are more popular than ever – and there are plenty of good reasons to buy them used. You often get classics, nostalgia and true analog sound at a great price. But how do you evaluate a used LP, and what should you look for before putting it in your shopping cart?
Here are 6 good tips for those who buy used vinyl records - both online and in stores.
1. Look for visible scratches and wear
The most important thing is of course the record itself. A vinyl with deep scratches can skip, crackle or even be unplayable. Small surface scratches are often okay – especially if they cannot be felt with a fingernail. Feel free to ask about condition or see pictures if you are buying online.
2. Ask about condition and grading
In the vinyl world, a “grading scale” is often used (Mint, Near Mint, Very Good, Good, etc.). It is a way to assess the condition of both the record and the cover. At Mission Afrika Genbrug we do not necessarily use this scale, but we always review our records for visible defects.
3. Check if the plate is complete
Is the inner sleeve missing? Is it a double-sided LP with one disc missing? It can make a difference – both to the listening experience and to the collector's value. Always read the description, or ask if you are in doubt.
4. How to clean and care for your vinyl records
Used records can collect dust and dirt, which affects the sound. Fortunately, this is easy to do. A soft anti-static brush or a microfiber cloth can remove the worst before playing. For more thorough cleaning, there are cleaning fluids or record washing machines – but lukewarm water with a little washing-up liquid and a soft cloth also work well. Remember to dry thoroughly and never use paper towels, as they can scratch the surface.
5. Buy from a trustworthy thrift store
When you buy used, it's nice to know that someone has held the record in their hands and evaluated it honestly. We do that in our webshop, where all records are hand-sorted and packaged with care. And you're also supporting a good cause.
6. Go exploring and find unique finds
Part of the charm of used vinyl is the pursuit of the unexpected. You might find that record your dad danced to in the 80s – or a forgotten classic you've never heard before. Used LPs are full of history and personality.
